Crowns

Crowns

Background

A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. A crown is sometimes known as a ‘cap’.

As a rule of thumb, generally, if a tooth has 50% or less of its original natural structure, it may need a crown. Of course, this is assessed on a case by case basis.

Here are some of the reasons for crowning:
  • the tooth has a large cavity.
  • tooth is broken or has a large chip or fracture.
  • tooth has had root canal treatment.
  • tooth has a large, weak filling.
  • to replace a failing or unacceptable existing crown.
  • for cosmetic improvement.
There are many types of crowns available at New Malden Smiles. For example:
  • Emax crowns
  • Porcelain bonded to metal crowns
  • Zirconia crowns
  • Gold alloy metal crowns (look like gold)
The dentist will discuss which is the best and appropriate option for you. Today's all-ceramic crowns look very natural. No more dark lines of the older type of crowns.

What To Expect

This procedure normally involves 2 visits. One for preparation and the second for fitting. A temporary crown is placed in the intervening period.

The procedure works as follows:
The tooth that needs a crown is prepared and an impression is taken.
A crown is made in the dental laboratory by skilled technicians to fit the tooth precisely and match the neighbouring teeth.
The crown is then fitted securely to allow chewing and smiling with confidence.
"...I am really pleased with the crown that was fitted after the root canal treatment – it’s as good as new! I can highly recommend Dr Shah who, as always, was very supportive every step of the way. "
