Dentures

Background

People wear dentures to replace lost or missing teeth so they can enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence. Dentures are made of either acrylic (plastic), metal or the combination of the two.

Types

Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are removable appliances. They are appropriate for patients who are missing multiple teeth yet have some remaining teeth. In many cases, partial dentures are most appropriate where a fixed bridge or dental implants are not possible.

Partial dentures are typically made using an intricate metal alloy framework, which supports the pink and white acrylic used to replace the teeth and gums. They are held in the mouth with metal clips or clasps that attach to some of the remaining teeth. These dentures are extremely light, strong and durable. Partial dentures can also be held in place with dental implants.

Flexible Dentures
Flexible dentures are made from one of the modern materials which is extremely durable and virtually indestructible. For these dentures to be most effective, certain clinical criteria must be fulfilled. The dentist will explain which is the best option for you. The benefit of these dentures is that they are small, very strong and resilient, provide excellent aesthetics and they have clasps which can hook onto teeth for stability.

Complete Dentures
Complete or full dentures are a common solution if all your teeth on one or both jaws are missing. Complete dentures fulfil both cosmetic and functional concerns. When all your teeth are lost due to gum disease or trauma, the social issues are immediately challenging. Speaking is also difficult without any teeth. Additionally, chewing and digesting food effectively becomes an issue.

Complete dentures are appropriate for patients without any teeth or those who will be losing any remaining teeth due to gum disease or severe tooth decay.

Some people are not able to tolerate dentures that move excessively. In such cases, dental implants can be a solution that will lock the dentures in place providing increased ability to chew foods and the confidence to smile without worry of the denture moving.
